Is face paint safe for my child: what to ask before booking

If you would rather book a painter: from 500,000₫ an hour.

Parents across Ho Chi Minh City, from District 2 to District 7, often ask the same question before a birthday party or school fair: is face paint safe for my child? We are face painters, not doctors, so we can't give medical advice, and we can't promise any paint suits every child. What we can do is tell you what to ask any face painter before you book, us included.

Why the product matters

Face paint made for skin is not the same as craft paint, poster paint or cheap costume makeup, which were not designed to go on skin. When you book a face painter, ask what product they use and read the manufacturer's label for ingredients, instructions and warnings. A good artist will answer without fuss and will show you the product if you ask.

Sensitive skin, eczema and allergies

Any paint can cause a reaction in a child with very sensitive skin, eczema or known allergies. If that sounds like your child, tell the artist before the day, and ask your child's doctor if you are unsure: they know your child and we don't. Some parents ask for a small trial on the inner arm before a full design, so ask the artist whether that is possible. If the skin turns red, itchy or sore, wash the paint off gently and stop.

Age: full face or arm and hand art

There is no single rule. Many artists prefer to paint a full face once a child can sit still for a few minutes and understands not to touch or rub the design. For toddlers, a simple arm or hand design is gentler, keeps paint away from the eyes and mouth, and doesn't need the child to stay still for long. Tell us your child's age and we will say what we would suggest.

Questions to ask before booking

Before booking any face painter in District 2, District 7 or elsewhere in Vietnam, it is worth asking:

  • What product do you use, and can I see the label?
  • My child has sensitive skin or allergies: what do you suggest?
  • How do you keep sponges and brushes clean between children?
  • What do you suggest for toddlers, and do you offer arm or hand art?
  • How long does a design last, and how should I remove it?

A face painter should be able to answer these clearly. We are happy to answer them before you decide.
