Third birthday party ideas that stay short and calm

If you would rather book a painter: from 500,000₫ an hour.

Third birthday party ideas start with three things: keep it short, invite few guests, and pick a time that does not clash with your child's nap. This guide covers how to plan it, activities you can run yourself, and how to add a tiny painted design that your child does not have to sit long for.

Keep it short and small

A young child can get tired when there are too many unfamiliar faces and too much happening at once. You can invite people your child already knows, and choose a few activities instead of filling the programme. A small party is often easier on you too.

Start with the guest list, then think about the cake, gifts and games. With fewer guests, it is easier to keep an eye on your child, and easier for them to find a quiet corner when needed.

Plan around nap time

You know your child's sleep better than anyone. A general suggestion is to start after the nap and a light snack, so your child is alert when guests arrive. If your child tends to get grumpy when tired, let the party end before the usual sleep time.

When you message us to book, tell us the time you chose so we can schedule the artist to arrive at the right moment. Also prepare 1 table and 2 chairs, and a shaded spot if the party is outdoors. If it rains, we move indoors.

Activities for three-year-olds

These are games you run yourself, not services we provide:

  • Play a few familiar songs and let your child dance along.
  • Set up a corner with colouring or blocks.
  • Read a short story before the cake.
  • Play peekaboo or gentle chase in an open space.

If you would like to add an act, our partner circus and magic team charges 800,000₫ per hour; see the circus and magic page. For a young child, think about whether they enjoy crowds and noise before you decide.

A small design on the hand or cheek

Face painting does not have to cover the whole face. For a three-year-old, a small design can make more sense. In the photo gallery there are a few you can look at: a small cupcake on the cheek, a small pumpkin on a boy's cheek, a rainbow star on the cheek, and a butterfly around one eye. There is also a photo of an artist painting a toddler sitting on a parent's lap, which can help a child feel settled while sitting close to someone familiar.

We estimate that each artist paints about 10 to 15 faces per hour, depending on the design. Our prices are public: 500,000₫ for 1 hour and 900,000₫ for 2 hours, with longer bookings negotiated separately. If your child has sensitive skin, tell us before booking; we cannot promise every colour suits every child. Children can choose a design before you book, so show them the photos first. If your child says no

Some three-year-olds shake their head right away, and that is normal. Do not push. A few gentle options:

  • Let your child watch friends or adults being painted first.
  • Ask whether they would like just a tiny design on the back of the hand.
  • Let your child sit on your lap while the artist paints.
  • Leave it for later: if they change their mind within the booked hours, the artist is still there.

Quick answers about a third birthday party

How long should a party for a three-year-old last? Every child is different, so keep the party short enough that yours is still enjoying it. Keep it short enough that your child is still having fun, then book 1 hour of painting if you need it.

Can a three-year-old have face painting? A small design on the hand or cheek is a gentle place to start. Send us your child's age and temperament and we will suggest something.

Can the painting move indoors if it rains? Yes, we move indoors. You only need 1 table and 2 chairs in a dry spot.
