Full butterfly across the eyes

A full butterfly spreads its wings on both sides of the face, so it is the biggest and most dramatic choice. It also asks the most of the child: more time in the chair, and more patience for a longer sitting. It suits a child who loves dressing up, and a party where the line is short enough for a longer sitting.

The gallery has butterflies in several colours. One photo shows a smiling girl with a blue butterfly, and another shows a girl with a pink butterfly making a peace sign. Look at them with your child and decide how much of the face you would like the wings to cover. Then ask the artist how long that design takes.

One side of the face

A butterfly on one side of the face is a smaller step. One wing leaves the other side bare, so the child still sees a familiar face in the mirror. It is a good choice for a child who wants a butterfly but is not sure about a whole face.

If your child enjoys it, they can ask for the other side during the party. This size is also quicker, which matters when many children are waiting. Our estimate is that one artist paints roughly 10 to 15 faces an hour, depending on the design, so a smaller butterfly leans toward the faster end.

Small on the cheek or hand

Choosing colours

Colour is where butterflies differ most. The gallery shows two girls with pink and white designs, a girl with a blue butterfly, and a girl with a pink butterfly. The same shape in a different colour suits a different dress or party theme.

A quick way to choose:

• A pink or white dress goes with a pink and white butterfly.
• A blue dress, or a child who simply prefers blue, goes with a blue butterfly.
• If your child has a favourite colour, start there and let them decide.
