Working out numbers: an estimate of 10 to 15 faces an hour

The short formula: children who want a design, divided by 10 to 15, divided by the hours the booth is open. The result is the number of artists. A simple cheek design goes faster than a detailed character, so if you need to reach more children, favour simpler designs.

For example, 100 children want a design and the booth is open for 2 hours: 100 divided by 10 to 15, divided by 2, gives about 3.3 to 5 artists, so plan for 4 to 5. If the booth is open for only 1 hour, 100 children would need more than 5 artists, which is above our maximum, so open for 2 hours or split children by grade. Children may arrive all at once, so planning from the full headcount is the surest approach.

Arranging the queue so children do not wait in the sun

If the 1 June celebration is outdoors, sun is something to plan for. Some queue ideas:

• Put the painting table in a shaded spot, which is also what we need when painting outdoors.
• Set out chairs in the shade so children wait seated rather than standing.
• Hand out queue numbers or schedule by class, so children can visit other stations and return on their turn.
• Start the queue a little way from the table so the artist has room to work.
• Pick an indoor backup. If it rains, the booth moves indoors.

The school provides 1 table and 2 chairs. With several artists, ask us how many more are needed. The photo gallery has a photo of a Children's Day arch with two costumed mascots if you want ideas for decoration.

Choosing the number of artists: up to 5 for large events

Estimated capacity by number of artists, over 1 hour and 2 hours:

• 1 artist: about 10 to 15 faces in 1 hour, 20 to 30 in 2 hours
• 2 artists: about 20 to 30 in 1 hour, 40 to 60 in 2 hours
• 3 artists: about 30 to 45 in 1 hour, 60 to 90 in 2 hours
• 5 artists: about 50 to 75 in 1 hour, 100 to 150 in 2 hours

If the number of children is above what 5 artists can paint, you have three options: extend the hours, split the time by grade, or accept that not every child will get a design. For example, 200 children over 3 hours: 5 artists paint an estimated 150 to 225 faces, which may nearly cover everyone with simpler designs. Anything over 2 hours is negotiated separately. • Whether it is the school yard or indoors, and which district
• The number of children who want a design, and their age groups
• Hours wanted: 1 hour, 2 hours or longer
• Any child with sensitive skin, if you already know
