The Quick Math: Faces Per Artist Per Hour

One of the most common questions we get at Facepainting Việt Nam is: "How many artists do I actually need for my event?" The answer starts with a rough estimate: one artist can typically complete 10 to 15 faces per hour, depending on the designs (simple cheek art is quicker than full character faces).

To estimate your needs, use this formula:

Total Guests ÷ (10 to 15 faces per hour) ÷ Number of Hours = Artists Needed

For example, if you're expecting 100 kids at a 2-hour birthday party or community event:

  • 100 guests ÷ 12 faces/hour (average) ÷ 2 hours ≈ 4.2, so plan for 4 or 5 artists

If the same 100 guests arrive within a single hour, the formula gives more than 8 artists, which is beyond the five we can bring. In that case, book two hours or offer quick cheek designs, so the queue fits what the team can paint.

Scaling Teams for Corporate Family Days & School Fairs

Corporate family days, school fairs, and large festivals in Ho Chi Minh City (District 2, District 7, and beyond) can have unpredictable footfall, with many children arriving in the first half hour. This is where team size matters most.

Facepainting Việt Nam can scale up to 5 artists working simultaneously at one event, which raises the hourly capacity (these are estimates, not guarantees):

  • 1 artist: ~10-15 faces/hour
  • 2 artists: ~20-30 faces/hour
  • 3 artists: ~30-45 faces/hour
  • 5 artists: ~50-75 faces/hour

For a school fair with 300 students across a 3-hour window, a team of 5 artists could paint roughly 150-225 faces, which is between half and three-quarters of the students. For larger corporate family days with 500+ guests, we recommend combining a bigger team with longer booking windows or setting up multiple stations to distribute the queue.

Avoiding Long Queues: Practical Tips

Even with the right number of artists, poor planning can still create bottlenecks. Here's how to keep the line moving:

  • Offer a mix of quick cheek designs and more detailed ones so guests can choose based on wait tolerance
  • Set up multiple painting stations spaced apart to prevent one long single-file line
  • Use a simple numbered ticket or sign-up sheet for large events so guests can wander and return
  • Schedule face painting during a defined window (e.g., first 2-3 hours) rather than an entire all-day event
  • Communicate expected wait times clearly with signage, especially for events over 100 guests
  • Book extra time (2 hours instead of 1) if your guest count is on the higher end; it can be easier than adding more artists

Planning around your guest count, not just your budget, is the best way to keep queues short.
